Gibson Street Gala

Thursday May 17, 2012

Eric Kay, chair of the Gibson Street Gala planning group says:

“Gibson Street Gala is now in its 8th year and 2012 will build on the tremendous success of last year's Gala. During this event, we close the road to traffic and have a great community celebration for one afternoon between 12 and 6pm on the 17th June.

This popular family friendly event brings together the hard work, dedication and creativity of all the volunteer organisers, as well as all the performers, participants and events' coordinators on the day itself.

So what do we have in store?

Live music and entertainment will take place over 3 stages at Gibson Street, GOW Backcourt and Otago Lane. New to this year's Gala, we also have a community stage where local schools and groups will be performing drama and music sets. Amongst many others, our stages feature music from Little FireBelmondo, Machines in Heaven and dBass Collective.  Samba from Eletricat in Otago Lane will get you moving and the energising performance from Glasgow Capoeira will amaze you. Take time out to learn all about Otago Lane and the campaign to preserve this tranquil gem in the hustle of the West End.

Additionally, we have a multitude of children's activities at the Gala - so much so that there are 4 Gala Kidzones this year!  In the Otago Street Kidzone, creativity abounds with the Gala's theme of Knights and Princesses. Participate in art and craft workshops with Damselfly and Queen Bee and Hillhead High School, then head for some fun medieval activities in the Gala castle. In Eldon Street, attractions include antique fire engines, a climbing wall and a bouncy castle. A sports area on the grass beneath Eldon Street Bridge will be new this time with some “come and try” sports workshops. In Park Road, the community stage will be in full swing. We are looking forward to seeing "Oh, what a Knight" performed by Hillhead Primary pupils, then heading into St. Silas’ Church for some fair-trade baking, chatting and relaxing. What’s more, the new Hillhead Primary School is opening its doors this year. Activities include a storyteller, a cyber cafe and a pamper zone. We are also delighted to report that some of the parents and pupils are organising tours of their new school on Gala Day.

Phew - that lot will tire kids of all ages out!

Then, there are stalls offering a variety of goods, services and information dotted throughout Gibson Street. Along Westbank Quadrant, ArtFusion will have a fantastical explosion of artistic events and stalls offering both art works and enticing interactive experiences. One to watch is the parade of specially created umbrellas, on show and for sale on the day. Whether the weather is fair or not this should be one of the most memorable sights of this Gala day!

Please make sure you visit the GOW backcourt  through the Westbank Quadrant entrance. Here you will find a music stage, taster massage sessions, Tchai-Ovna tea tent, Chinese Culture stall, a wee bric-a-brac shop and many more delights awaiting you in this delightful hidden garden.

To recuperate after all that fun you can sample some of the best food and drink in the West End, on offer as usual from all our fantastic local traders.

It's going to be a great Gala!”
